Irish honey Start-up to launch new products at Ploughing Championships

Following on from their Irish Blossom Honey being shortlisted as a finalist for the upcoming Blas na hEireann awards, premium Irish honey company BeeActiv will launch a suite of two new products at the 2016 ploughing championships in Screggan, Tullamore on Tuesday 20th October.

The launch is part of the ‘Local Enterprise Village’ which was announced last month by The Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Ms. Mary Mitchell O’ Connor T.D. The village will be home to 84 small businesses from around the country for the three days of the Championships, with last year’s Pavilion generating €650,000 in sales for Ireland’s up-and-coming business entrepreneurs.

BeeActiv’s product launch will focus on their unique ‘Raw Ivy Honey’ and complimentary ‘Ivy Honey & Lemon Lozenges’, all Irish made using Irish honey.  Recently described by the well-respected John & Sally McKenna’s Food Guide as “one of the best we’ve tried”, a “beauty, with a deep, resonant taste and a lingering aftertaste”, their Raw Ivy Honey has also garnered the attention of multi-award winning celebrity chef Wade Murphy who regularly features it in his menu at restaurant ‘1826 Adare’.

Since founding BeeActiv in Limerick in late 2014 with help from Enterprise Ireland’s flagship ‘New Frontiers’ entrepreneur initiative, beekeepers Conan McDonnell (Adare, Co. Limerick) and Michael Geary (Ballyporeen, Co. Tipperary) have grown strength to strength in the Irish Honey market by focusing on the health benefits of bee-centric products and aiming these at the thriving health food sector.

Conan says of the ivy plant; “its use as a herbal medicine goes back centuries with benefits for people suffering from chesty coughs and the plant is a real champion for insects and birds, flowering late in the year thereby giving an important boon of nectar and pollen to honeybees, while the berries last long through the winter”.

Michael Geary who is a chemistry lecturer at Limerick’s Institute of Technology, where he and Conan first met, said their “combined knowledge in science and beekeeping led to a natural desire to learn about the health benefits of honey” and that the business “just grew organically from there”. He continued “we believe that ivy honey is something really special and unique to Ireland” and this uniqueness has been picked up by the Irish Health Trade Association who have shortlisted the ivy honey for the ‘Best food and Drink’ product at the upcoming Irish Health Expo in the RDS (2nd & 3rd October)

BeeActiv will facilitate their launch from the podium at 3:40pm on Tuesday for approximately 30 minutes, with free samples of all products available to try on the day. More information can be found on their website www.beeactiv.ie
